Free Learning Center for Amazon AWS and Linux Configurations

Welcome to the Learning Center – Open EC2

This website offers a comprehensive introduction to basic installations and configurations for Amazon AWS services, with a focus on EC2 Linux instances. The key areas covered include default email configurations, setting up Nginx or Apache for WordPress, and basic Axigen email services. The content also touches on related security and performance services.

Skill Requirements

To fully benefit from this learning center, a solid foundation in Unix/Linux, familiarity with text editors like “vi,” and strong problem-solving skills are essential. These skills are transferable and can be applied to other platforms, such as Akamai. While the learning curve is steep, mastering these services can open doors to marketing new client solutions that leverage low-cost, enterprise-quality VPS servers.

About the Author

I am a former IT Solutions Architect with extensive experience working on projects for ASX-listed companies. After leaving the workforce, I’ve developed a strong understanding of Amazon AWS services, using them to host websites and applications at a semi-professional level for friends, small businesses, and IT colleagues. My goal is to encourage the adoption of IT industry standards and business principles, drawing from my decades of validated experience in both academia and the workforce.

Empowering Your Learning Journey

Through this learning center, I hope to guide you in understanding “end-to-end” design and delivery from a solutions-oriented perspective. This will enhance your ability to make informed, confident decisions that add value to your projects and are appreciated by others.

SES Email relays and forwarding are dependent on the previous articles.

We can select what we initially need from the SES Email articles below, as the content is a complete picture of what I use for live clients, having developed since 2012. Content, with appreciation, has been from many sources.

We can look at developing this further with Linux shell scripts separately.

Debian 12 is basically the same installation as Debian 11.

Akamai/Linode is lower cost on a 1CPU USD $5 plan than AWS. It works really well for a low cost website (or multi-site). However, it does need the memcached installation. I would not use the $5 plan for a small business with, say, 50 web hits a day. Once we get more serious we need to compare plans between providers more thoughtfully. Linode has a few things to get used to. E.g. create another sudoer user with root privileges, and login to that user, then sudo su. This lets the shell terminal behave correctly. You can also use the swap file commands to add another 256MB of swap space, with the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab.
